On November 16th, 2020, the thirty-ninth edition of “First-class Strategies” Young Doctoral Students Forum of Taiyuan University of Technology was successfully held in the conference room 709 of Science and Technology Building. Zhang Lingling, a doctoral student enrolled in 2016 from the College of Physics and Optoelectronics, gave a presentation entitled “Research on New Portable Biochip Testing and Its Application in Early Diagnosis of Diseases”. Ren Xiaojun, Deputy Director of Nephrology Department of Shanxi Baiqiu’en Hospital, Professor Hao Yuying, Dean of College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Professor Chen Weiyi, Dean of College of Biomedical Engineering, Professor Jin Baoquan, Deputy Director of the Key Lab of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education and Professor Li Xiaochun, supervisor of the presenter, attended the report and made comments. Over 100 students listened to the presentation.
Zhang Lingling first introduced the concept of POCT and recent innovation in this field, and then focused on novel biochip preparation and portable rapid testing. The technology characterized by low cost, high sensitivity, high throughput and portability, is expected to substitute the existed method. Finally, Zhang Lingling shared her own experience and thoughts in her study and research, encouraging everyone to read more, think more, try more and practice more.
Experts took highly of Zhang’s work, achievements and research attitude, and offered valuable suggestions. Deputy Director Ren Xiaojun discussed the significance of biomarker testing in clinical settings and the selection of target genes for Ebola virus testing. In particular, he pointed out that the reliability of the assay needs to be verified by a large number of samples. He especially mentioned that certain indicators of disease diagnosis need to be monitored dynamically over a long period of time, and he hoped that the presenter would take this into account in future work and optimize the versatility of the assay for further application of the research results in practice. Professor Chen Weiyi suggested that the probability of error in the AFB1 assay should be counted simultaneously, and that the procedure for the application of the testing mentioned in the report should be further studied. Professor Hao Yuying suggested that a comparison between these testing methods should be added to the report, especially when testing precision and accuracy, and adding a summary and comparison section at the end to improve the completeness. Professor Jin Baoquan suggested that the report can still be improved under the guidance of the experts’ professional comments and adjustment of report structure. Professor Li Xiaochun, the supervisor, made the final comments. She acknowledged the work of the students and pointed out that it is not only necessary to work hard on research, but also to think deeply about the meaning of the topic, and encouraged students to combine their research with the country and society.
Students actively discussed with the speaker, and the forum ended successfully.
